The Grid
Electricity pricing is complicated! It also involves demand charges, time of use rates, utility demand response programs, wholesale markets, carbon intensity, and non-net metered solar. These encourage shifting electricity use from expensive, polluting periods to cheaper, cleaner ones.
There are >200,000 price combos in the U.S., updated every minute. Households can access some incentives, while others are only available to aggregators who manage larger power volumes.
Not all devices are equal: consider devices as "dumb", "connected-smart", or actually smart.
Dumb thermostat relies on you to manually press buttons, then zigzags around a set temperature.
Connected-smart thermostats connect to the internet, so you can set the temp from anywhere.
Actually smart thermostats looks at what the grid is doing (or is expected to do) to lower costs while keeping you comfy. This could be pre-cooling, or spacing out that zigzag, using cheaper energy with no active management required.
We get the numbers
WattShift's technology aggregates, models, and forecasts thousands of live-time data points: energy prices, electricity rate plans, consumer performance specifications, inside and outside temperatures, device operational constraints, device thermal modelling… the list goes on!
We crunch the numbers
WattShift completes analysis and optimization in real-time in a linear optimization system to create an electricity use schedule.
You sit back and save
WattShift dynamically controls the device to reduce electricity cost while maintaining performance. There's no need to watch the prices, just set your preferences and let WattShift work away in the background.
Most savings come straight off the household bill - up to 30% of a household's heating/cooling costs. WattShift can provide this service as any aggregator incentives, come directly to us. We never prioritize ourselves though, we only succeed when you save.
Save money, and the planet!
